Whale watching was born in Southern California and the region continues to rank high among the most exciting destinations in the world for those who want to take to the water in search of marine mammals. Late July is the height of the blue whale season. Nowhere else are the largest creatures to ever inhabit planet earth as abundant and as accessible. Playful humpback whales also spend the summer months in the area. Majestic fin whales make southern California their year-round home. Several species of dolphin, from the acrobatic common dolphins to the oddly shaped Risso’s dolphins ply these waters. Lightning fast Dall’s porpoises dart through the ocean. California sea lions watch the passing vessels from the vantage point of the navigation buoys. In all, 37 species of marine mammals have been recorded in the area. We will embark on an adventure into these waters on the Magician, a clean, comfortable, and lucky boat that boasts a top-notch crew.

Meet the Grunion at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
Monday, July 24, 2017
Along southern California's sandy beaches, from March through September, one of the most remarkable life cycles in the ocean occurs; the California grunion comes ashore to spawn. Approximatley 1 to 3 hours after the evening high tide, female grunion and their male suitors swim up on the shore en masse. The females wiggle tail first into the sand and then lay some 300 to 3,000 eggs, while the males encircle them depositing milt to fertilize the eggs below the sand surface. In this protected pod, the eggs develop for some 10 days until the next high tide triggers the grunion to hatch. They will mature in approximately one year thus completing the life cycle. Grunion live for 3 to 4 years and may spawn 4 to 8 times per season.
The Aquarium opens at 8:00pm and an auditorium program begins at 9:00pm, followed by a guided observation at the beach. You must arrive before 9:00pm to see the movie.
This is an evening event! Warm clothing and a flashlight are recommended.
